Axie Infinity’s Mee6 Bot Gets Hacked
On Wednesday, the Axie Infinity announced that the MEE6 bot on its main server was hacked. They said the hackers used the MEE6 bot to add permissions to a fake Jiho account, making fake announcements about a mint. MEE6 is a Discord bot allowing admins to automatically give and remove roles and send messages.
Projects which installed the MEE6 bot on their servers faced similar issues. Admin accounts such as RTFKT, PROOF/Moonbirds, PXN, Memeland, and Cool Cats are compromised.
Later, Axie Infinity stated that the announcements showing a special mint have been deleted. Although, some users might still see the message and require restarting their Discord.
“We have removed the Mee6 bot from the server and will never do a surprise mint.”
The will be posting updates regarding the incident n Twitter, Discord, Substacteamk, and Facebook.
According to the rMEE6 official support, MEE6 is not hacked, but admins in the servers were compromised, which allows attackers to use MEE6 features to post messages.
The team and community of Axie Infinity are having a tough time after the recent Ronin bridge hack in which $625 million were stolen. Axie Infinity play-to-earn game has witnessed a decline in its popularity with, many top players leaving the game.
As per security experts on Discord, the hackers first attempt to attack admin accounts to create a reaction role feature from MEE6 to give an alternate account admin. Through this method, attackers send webbook messages while hiding the compromised administrator account. At present, removing MEE6/the webbooks is the best solution rather than trying to identify the compromised account.
The Axie Infinity project has witnessed many delays and hacks. The community is furious over the delays in launching Land and rewards for the game. There are players who are leaving the game as the project continues to suffer hacks. In just 6 months, the AXS token price also fell from a high of $160 to $20.
