Bitcoin Faces Payment Challenges as AI Models Favor Stablecoins, Reports Blackrock
A recent analysis from Blackrock highlights significant challenges for Bitcoin in the evolving payment landscape, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) models increasingly favor stablecoins over Bitcoin for transactions.
While Bitcoin retains its status as a leading savings technology, its effectiveness as a payment method is being questioned. The report, co-authored by Blackrock's ETF executives, suggests that stablecoins are better suited for the agentic economy, with Bitcoin relegated to a secondary role.
Research from the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) indicates a marked shift in preferences among AI models, with support for stablecoins rising from 53% to 77% in just a few months, while Bitcoin's appeal for payments has plummeted from 36% to 20%.
Despite these setbacks, Bitcoin advocates argue that the cryptocurrency's potential as a payment solution is not entirely lost. Innovations like the Lightning Network and new tools for AI agents could help Bitcoin regain traction in the payment sector.
However, the competition is fierce, with established protocols backed by major players like Coinbase and Visa dominating the landscape. As the digital economy continues to evolve, the future of Bitcoin as a payment method remains uncertain.
