Creating public destinations at the water’s edge can build a strong constituency and political capital for cleaning water bodies in India. Knowledge-sharing and activities such as walkshops, huddles, hackathons and interventions at Placemaking India Week 2022 will centre on the social, economic and cultural and ecological uses of water bodies which range from stepwells to the ocean. Themes identified for elaboration at the event include community collaboration in riverside rejuvenation, sustainable seaside developments, water-sensitive design, climate-responsive planning and heritage-based placemaking. Placemaking India, a trans-disciplinary collective of architects, urban planners, urban designers, heritage conservationists, human geographers, social workers, academics and bloggers and local and regional government administrations, is committed to enhancing the public realm through small-scale planning that encourages sustainable and democratic use of communal spaces.
