What is Pepe coin? Explained
Meme coins have been gaining popularity in the crypto community, with Dogecoin being the original meme-inspired token that was launched back in 2013 as a joke but gained a cult following. Other meme coins such as Shiba Inu, Baby Doge, and Floki have also gained traction for their meme backstory and potential for high returns on investment.
Recently, a new player has entered the market – Pepe Coin, also known as $PEPE. Launched in April 2023 by an anonymous user, it is inspired by the iconic Pepe the Frog. Unlike other meme coins, Pepecoin was quietly launched without any pre-sale or taxes, positioning itself as a coin for the people. Its website outlines a roadmap with three phases: Meme, Vibe, and HODL, with the goal of achieving a Meme Takeover with 100,000+ holders.
Pepe coin's initial supply is 420.69 trillion tokens, with 93.1% sent to the liquidity pool and 6.9% reserved for future exchange listings and liquidity pools. However, there have been concerns raised by Binance about the lack of an underlying value support mechanism and the possibility of insiders purchasing 7% of the total token supply after the Token Generation Event.

Despite early success for some investors, with one trader reportedly making a 5,000,000% profit in just three weeks, Pepecoin has experienced a significant drop in value. It lost almost 45% of its value since its peak of $0.00000431 and dropped the market cap from $1.8 billion to $878.9 million at the time of writing.
The question on many investors' minds is whether Pepecoin can reach $1. According to The Crypto Times, it is unlikely to happen due to a lack of a real use case like Bitcoin and Ethereum, 420 trillion tokens in circulation, and a lack of inherent value or potential for financial gain. There are also concerns about large investors buying up the coin and resulting in a concentration of tokens in too few hands.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Pepecoin, but analysts are skeptical about its potential to become mainstream or compete with established cryptocurrencies. While it has gained a following for its meme backstory and potential for high returns, investors should exercise caution and do their own research before investing in Pepecoin or any other meme-inspired token.
