Telecom Regulator Orders ISPs to Block Crypto Sites in Nepal
Nepal has recently adopted a position that is mostly hostile to Cryptocurrencies, in contrast to the global trend toward greater economic integration of this innovative technology. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA), the country's telecoms regulator, has just mandated that all ISPs in Nepal ban access to Cryptocurrency trading sites. According to published notification, violators of the most recent rule shall be prosecuted. According to the most recent rule from the NTA, no service provider may allow its customers to access any Cryptocurrency or digital asset-related websites, applications, or platforms.

Regulators across the globe are ramping up their attempts to make the Cryptocurrency business more open and regulated after 2022 saw the highest number of Crypto frauds to date. The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the country's central bank, issued a statement in September 2021 declaring the buying, selling, and mining of Cryptocurrencies to be unlawful. In addition, it is illegal to advocate for the usage of Cryptocurrencies in the country.

What is Cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrencies are a kind of online currency that relies on encryption technology. They make it possible to make safe internet transactions without any middlemen. These entries are protected using Cryptographic methods such as elliptic curve encryption, public-private key pairs, as well as hashing operations, all of which fall under the umbrella term "Crypto." Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies may be mined or bought and sold on Crypto exchanges. Unfortunately, not all online stores accept Cryptocurrency payments. Bitcoin and other widely-known Cryptocurrencies are very seldom utilized in everyday commerce. Furthermore, because of their explosive growth in worth, Cryptos have been widely used as a medium of exchange. International wire transfers are also possible, but on a smaller scale.
More on Nepal’s Ban on Crypto Sites
Internet service providers are being told to make it impossible to connect criminal financial-related sites, applications, as well as systems. The NTA had already released a warning of a similar kind in April of last year. According to reports, ISPs in the nation often disobey the rules set out by the regulator. According to the NTA, the country's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has said that the trade of Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin has led to a rise in economic crime.
The government of Nepal has taken a more stringent stance against the Cryptocurrency business, as seen by the recent decision from the regulatory body. Despite the government's efforts to stamp out the Cryptocurrency business, research from the premier blockchain analytics company Chainalysis indicates that developing countries, such as Nepal, are driving blockchain growth. Nepal has moved up to number sixteen on the list of countries that have adopted Cryptocurrencies, above Great Britain. The Law Library of Congress published a study in November 2021 showing that Nepal is among only 9 governments which have outright outlawed Crypto trade as well as mining. China, Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Qatar, and Tunisia are just some of the other nations that have banned the practice.
NRB's main arguments were a rise in the possibility of fraud and the unlawful outflow of local wealth. NRB also issued a public warning that people engaging in Cryptocurrency transactions might suffer legitimate repercussions under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) of 2019 if they were to be discovered. The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is working on drafting a statute that will establish its authority and mandate for issuing a digital equivalent of the Nepalese rupee, the country's fiat currency. Amidst the government's best efforts to stamp out the practice, the use of Cryptocurrencies is booming in Nepal. Lower-middle-income nations, such as Nepal, Kenya, as well as Indonesia, are among the top 20 countries in terms of total average rating with relation to Cryptocurrency adoption, according to a research from blockchain analytics company Chainalysis published in September 2022.
Even though a lot of people in the Crypto and blockchain industries call India, Nepal's neighbor, home, the country's central bank has taken a similar stance on Cryptocurrency. Equally important to remember is that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) just experimented with commercial CBDC, which was deemed unsuccessful by the banking industry in India. Since it is seen as comparable to gambling, India has also slapped a hefty tax of 30% on Cryptocurrency. Almost one percent (0.9%) TDS will be withheld from every trade. When such rules took effect in 2022, speculators shifted $8.35 billion to other currencies.
