How Could India Lead the Metaverse?
Though the metaverse concept is new, there has been considerable discussion over how it should be described. All descriptions presume that Extended Reality (XR) is a mixture of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality experiences that are available and interactive in real-time and will serve as the metaverse's access point. These technologies have welcomed the arrival of unique applications in industries like gaming and entertainment, business solutions and training, and military and defence.
Also, blockchain technology is predicted to play a significant part in the development of the metaverse since it allows for a legitimate claim of ownership and the transferability of digital asset. The aim appears to be that XR and blockchain will come together to create apps that progressively combine our physical and digital identities, paving the way for new types of social and economic involvement.
Our country's Digital India Infrastructure, which is currently in development, sets the way for leadership in the metaverse. Indians currently control the world's largest digital identification-based system, with the Aadhaar identity number powering nearly every element of the citizen's connection with the government. The country boasts the world's greatest amount of digital financial transactions. India is constructing a digital layer to deliver health services using digital technology and a Unique record that holds each individual's medical information.

Since 2015, India has climbed over 40 places in the Global Innovation Index, placing 46th overall. India also boasts a strong entrepreneurial culture, lately seeing substantial expansion. The year before, a historic 42 start-ups were valued at more than $1 billion, just behind the United States and China in terms of the formation of these 'unicorns.' This environment is backed by several favourable consumer trends, including increasing disposable incomes, increased smartphone usage, and mobile data affordability.
The nation is not unknown for quickening the growth of the economy through adopting new technology, most notably in the late 1990s with the smartphone revolution. Over the last decade, India Stack has emerged as a collection of technological projects, such as the national digital identification and payments infrastructure, that have launched a new age of financial participation in the nation.
Today, Digital India is viewed as a process booster, a provider of interface solutions that ease interactions and transactions. Presently, Digital India is not recognized as critical to connecting the country to the metaverse. With the tools and frameworks of what we now call Digital India, we will begin to identify behavioural patterns in the metaverse. The use of blockchain to improve land records and eliminate corruption is only one piece of the pie, including developing and selling native NFTs.

According to statistics, Indian gaming income will more than triple to $7 billion by 2026, as video streaming in India continues to grow at a fast pace. Transmedia experiences have grown in favor as gaming has grown in popularity, particularly with the pandemic. Many gaming platforms offer virtual venues for concerts, exhibitions, and company promotions, promoting the concept that social and cultural activities are not restricted to in-person connections.
Even if it does not completely accept NFT ownership, India's decision to tax virtual digital assets indicates acknowledging that individuals place value in them. According to metaverse enthusiasts, who say that one cannot exist without another, the dispute appears to have a long way to go. NFTs may not become a reality until many issues are handled, but there are hopeful signs that new technologies are on the way.
There is a need for Digital India to be recognized from the metaverse's point of view as well. The metaverse age has already come. As we have stated, India, as the top producer of software talent in a world increasingly dominated by digital technology, is approaching a sector in which it might be a pioneer in so many ways.
The Bottomline
The issue of meta-governance (which the metaverse may obtain in the future) is part of a larger discussion over whether the metaverse should or could be compatible with the private sector. Various open standards for the metaverse have been suggested; however, it appears that the interests of some technological organizations in keeping control exceed the incentives for acceptance. Despite this, little thought has been given to the possibility that interoperability may be rendered meaningless in the absence of a uniform regulatory policy environment. Is it conceivable to have a single metaverse if the rules monetizing and controlling it are created and executed differently throughout the world?
New technologies have a wide range of effects on industry, society, and politics, and governments sometimes respond too late. It is obvious that India's tech governance and regulatory policy environment is changing as best practices from across the world impact crucial decisions made by both regulators and enterprises.
